Mendelssohn's Elijah

We are bringing Mendlssohn's Elijah to De La Warr Pavilion on Saturday 2 May 2026 at 7:30pm. Felix Mendelssohn’s famous and breath-taking oratorio brings to life the dramatic biblical story of the prophet Elijah. Written for the 1846 Birmingham Music Festival and hailed as a triumph, this masterpiece remains as popular today. The score combines Baroque grandeur with gorgeous Romantic orchestration, and is packed with thrilling choruses, lyrical solos and dramatic orchestral passages, building to a fiery climax with Elijah’s ascent to heaven in a flaming chariot. Conductor Kenneth Roberts will bring together the Sussex Concert Orchestra, soloist Kristy Swift, Louisa Hunter-Bradley, Kristian Thorkildsen and Peter Grevatt.
